After reading the "Famous 5-minute Install" I thought this would be a cinch.
    Negative.

I've spent more time than I care to admit trying to install using guidelines directly from wordpress and several blogs.

    Here's what I've done.

    1)Purchased Domain
    2)Set up hosting at NearlyFreeSpeech
    3)Created the site
    4)Downloaded and unzipped WordPress
    5)Created a process
    6)Created a database
7)Opened wp-config-sample and entered in my information, username, password, etc... then quadruple-checked it was all correct
    8)changed the name to wp-config
    9)Downloaded the FTP client, Filezilla
10)Made the connection between Filezilla and NearlyFreeSpeech
11)Dragged and dropped the wordpress folder into the public folder
    --->here's where it gets confusing.
I get a lot of errors in red: "file transfer failed" and "no such file or directory" then a green "new directory"

    It looks like this:

Error: Directory /home/public/wordpress/wpincludes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced/skins/default: no such file or directory
    Command: cd "/home/public/wordpress/wpincludes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced/skins"
Error: Directory /home/public/wordpress/wpincludes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced/skins: no such file or directory
    Command: cd "/home/public/wordpress/wp includes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced"
    Response: New directory is: "/home/public/wordpress/wp-includes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced"
    Command: mkdir "skins"
    Response: mkdir /home/public/wordpress/wp-includes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced/skins: OK

Then after it's finished transferring, Filezilla reads 981 successful transfers and zero failed transfers.

    So it worked?

12)Different blogs say to check out different sites for the final step.
    I visited mysite.com,http://mysite.com/wp-admin/install.php, http://mysite.nfshost.com/wordpress, and even http://mysite.sshhost.com/wordpress

None of them are taking me to the installation page on my site.

13)Went back and put in secret keys from a secret key generator in the generic text areas of wp-config

14)Deleted the FTP Filezilla site and folder and created them again with the updated wp-config

    14) One blog mentioned a part that I had missed. I thought I had created a domain from the NearlyFreeSpeech site without going through phpMyAdmin. They went through phpMyAdmin, so I did all of the steps for that and created a wordpress user with all sorts of privileges. I named the database wordpress, as I had already saved the the wp-config file database name with the name, wordpress.

    15) Tried the websites and still nothing works.

    Am I missing anything?

so you've not been able to get to the installation page? you need to speak to your host about that.

I thought this was a support forum?

yes this is a support forum. I have taken time out of my day to give you free support by telling you what you need to do, ie that you need to contact your host as your problem appears most likely to be with your hosting not being set up properly, or you have not uploaded the files to the correct place. Your hosting company knows how their servers are set up.

Please drop the sarcasm in future - we don't appreciate it here.

    My apologies.

I honestly didn't mean to be sarcastic. I was just a little confused by what you meant by "you need to speak with your host" as there weren't that many details included.

I thought that maybe I missed a step? That's why I carefully outlined everything I did.. or maybe I got it out of order.

Now that I know that I probably did everything correctly and that it may be a problem with my host, I'll see what I can do about contacting them. I don't know if you're familiar with Nearly Free Speech, but unlike wordpress, they don't have free support at all!

Anyway, it sounds like your day hasn't been going so great, so I hope it gets better. Thanks for the tip!

P.S. Just be glad you're not in my situation...

    Dear Michael,

Nearlyfreespeech is hosted on windows server using a .NET platform and employs Maria DB which is still under several tests.

WordPress, works great with linux servers, but works with windows but with some tricks.

However you can check the following blog for known errors and issues.

    http://blogs.iis.net/richma/archive/2009/12/30/installing-word-press-on-iis-using-the-web-platform-installer-webpi.aspx

You can skip the part of installation and go straight to issues.

Suggestion : Get a linux web hosting platform.
BTW how much are you going to pay annually to nearlyfreespeech?

    Regards

  8. cubecolor suggesting asking your host because they can actually check your webhost account and see if the files were there. :) We cannot.
