Installing a new banner (5 posts)

    In the interest of full disclosure, I'm new to blogging. Moreover, I started out this morning trying to install and use b2evolution. Totally opaque -- lousy documentation that assumed a tremendous amount of prior knowledge on the part of the user. Ended up uninstalling it and going with WP.
    I was able to install WP 1.0 without any problem. Installation on my hosting company's machine was done automatically by clicking a few buttons. I was also posting my first blog entry within minutes. Very easy to use.
    Now I would like to personalize my site, which includes replacing the default banner with one of my own. I've spent several hours now going through the manual and looking at the forums and I can't find anything that explains in detail what is involved. I assumed that the "index.php" file would have to be edited but I can't figure out what I need to edit. No doubt this is simple. Would someone please make it simpler -- tell me exactly what type of file (jpg or png) I need to use, where I need to put it, and how I access it.
    Thanks.

    Howdy - it's actually pretty easy and the fact that you can edit index.php from with the app makes it that much easier. Open that template and look for something like this near the top (lines 29 - 31) it look like this.
    <body>
    <div id="rap">
    <h1 id="header">"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?></h1>

    Replace the a href yadda yadda with an image tag,(../../images/whateverpicture.jpg Make sure that image you link to has its permissions altered correctly.
    Also, if you're using webhosting (vs. hosting on your own box) you might find that a good FTP utility (I'm on a Mac and use Panic's Transfer) that allows easy permission changes is a good thing. A CSS editor is also kind of nice.
    Does that help?

    Many thanks. Everything worked fine. I'm now a "member" also. Check out the website: Voice of the Candidate. I suspect I'll have a few more questions as time goes on.
    Thanks again.
