Installed ok but cannot access dashboard (45 posts)

After a) trying to upgrade from 2.6 unsuccessfully, I cleared out the wordpress directory, installed a clean edition of wp 3.3.1, created a new mysql database, edited the wp-config.php and uploaded, established a database connection and logged in ok. Only - once logged in there is nothing there, just a blank browser screen. No dashboard. Using FF 9.0.1. Any help welcome. It seems this is a bit of a common problem as I noticed a previous poster had the same issue although he arrived at it via a different route from me.

You mean you reinstalled wordpress or just upload the files and folders

I deleted everything wordpress from my web server. I then installed a newly downloaded copy of wordpress 3.3.1 by unzipping it and uploading all the files to the web server. I then created a new mysql database and edited the wp-config file with the new database's parameters and uploaded that to my web server. I then ran the install.php on the web server. I got the message everything installed ok, got the login screen, logged in ok but then only got a blank screen instead of the dashboard. So yes, it was a clean install to the server.

I find I cannot run any of the .php files from the browser address bar. Makes me think that wordpress isn't finding the php interpreter. Is there somewhere one can configure the path to this? I would have thought that wordpress would have had to establish a connection to the interpreter before completing installation. Or could it be something else again? All I get is blank screens in my browser window when, eg, I run http://www.unlimitedmarketing.net/wordpress/wp-admin/index.php which should surely bring something up?

    Your website open fine here

Working for me with that URL also. And also now if I input http://www.unlimitedmarketing.net/wordpress/index.html. Login works ok, too. But still no dashboard.

I've done as you suggested and replaced the wp-admin directory on the server from a new downloaded zip file but still no luck. Unfortunately I have to take over management of a site that is currently hosted on wordpress and I need to learn it inside out pronto but it's not helping that I can't get a test install working. I don't want to have to rebuild the site from scratch in another application but it just may come to that if wordpress is so flaky.

have tried logging in with this url
    http://unlimitedmarketing.net/wordpress/wp-login.php
I do not know where you got index.html from as wordpress does not use index.html

Yeah, as I said, I can login ok but once I've logged in all I get is a blank screen, no dashboard.

I meant index.php; there is such a file in my wordpress root. However, it does nothing either. I also have an index.php in the wp-admin directory. Again, nada.

I installed wordpress 2 without any issues at all previously on the same server with the same settings. But wordpress 3 doesn't seem to want to play at all.

Check to make sure your server meets the requirements for the version of WordPress you are trying to install. Typically, a blank screen is an indication of a PHP error. I hope this helps!

If you have successfully installed other wordpress on same server then most likely there is problem in your wp-admin folder as that is used to display admin panel.

Did you replace wp-admin folder or just overwrite.

Each folder in wordpress will have index.php file may be blank file in some folders is there for security.

Tim, you hit it in one. WP 3 requires PHP 5.2.4 whereas my ISP is running PHP 5.2.17. I've asked them to upgrade but that's for sure the issue.

Govpatel - thanks for the time you spent trying to resolve my issue.

*cough* PHP 5.2.17 is later than 5.2.4 so that will not be an issue.

Ooops. Ok, well that's not it then. I get a full readout when I run phpinfo.php on the server, and I use php to process form info for a number of sites running on that server, so I'm sure php is installed ok. I ran a 'hello world' just to make sure.

Govpatel - I replaced the wp-admin folder but just to make sure I deleted it from the server and have re-uploaded it from the extracted zip file on my workstation.

Still no luck. In case it was a browser setting I've tried with FF, Chrome and even [shudder] Internet Explorer. With Chrome and IE I get a Server 500 error; with FF I get nothing at all.

That's for /wp-admin/ I can login ok with all browsers so wp-login is working ok.

Next step is to deleted the wordpress folders from the server, re-download wordpress 3.3.1 from wordpress.org and do a complete, clean reinstall once again. Starting now.....

I'm having the same trouble and I want to scream, but I may have found out why. If you're using cPanel for your site admin and back-end, try using Postgre SQL and PHP rather than MySQL. For some reason, My SQL is only running PHP version 2.something. Could be a possible fix, but unfortunately the Postgre servers are down at the moment so I have no way of confirming whether or not this will resolve the issue!

I just now updated to 3.3.1 and now have a screen saying I'm in Scheduled Maintenance. This is a self-hosted blog.

Worse, I cannot login at all.

If I have to reinstall, will I lose my data?

Ok, downloaded a fresh zip file. Cleaned out the server and did a fresh install from scratch. Still the same effect.

It seems to me that v3.3.1 is not ready for prime time yet. Is there an archive of backward versions? I can try with 3.3.0 and if that doesn't work go back to the release before that and so on until I find a stable one.

Re the MySql php thing. Why on earth would anyone develop and application that relies on a databse but which isn't built with the components the databse actually has?

It's running successfully on thousands (millions?) of web site. So whatever this is, it's specific to your site.

    Pardon?

I reinstall 3.1.4 from fresh too, and nothing... tried with 3.1.3 and had problems too. Today i wiil try installing the IIS version but im not sure if that's it. Is it a requirement to have debug build? could be some problem with apache?

Anyway franko, you can download older versions from here:

But what if I solved it and publish the solution? i would be consider impolite too?

If you have a solution, please post it by all means. But 5 additional people all saying the equivalent of "Me too!" not only doesn't contribute anything but it makes trying to help anyone 10x harder.

We WANT people to post their own topics. Please do try to help us help you.

OK, i really do not understand the spirit of spread the potencial same problem in six different topics, forcing us to check not one, but six different posts searching for an answer (wich by the way is already difficult to find) but i dont mean to drive this toppic on a different direction...so i will open my own's. Good Luck Franko!

PS: you can also try to install WP in a FreeHot like 000webhost and see if it runs there, perhaps is a server requirements problem.

To be honest, I can't be bothered. The site I've taken over will just have to be maintained through the dashboard which means I can't really do anything to make the site better from a design perspective.

Pity, there's so much I don't like about the design but if all I can do is what the dashboard lets me do, it'll just have to stay the way it is.

    Franko1497,

You have the ability to edit the pages and aesthetics from the editor within the dashboard. There's little I've found I can't do from the dashboard. What are you trying to change?

Tim, please read the thread. I cannot access the dashboard - IT DOESN'T APPEAR!
