Installed fine, dashboard area fine, home page is blank (24 posts)

Hi there. I've helped friends install previous versions of WP with no problems, but had trouble today on a fresh install of 2.6 for myself.

Everything installed fine, the dashboard works fine, and the themes all show up on the admin side, but regardless of which theme I select (even the default one) the blog home page / index.php is blank.

Where did I go wrong? thank you!

Did you install properly and update your blog by visiting myblog.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php?

If the dash board works fine, are you able to view your posts in admin mode?

What version did you have before you installed 2.6?

It's a fresh install from nothing, not an upgrade.

I'm only able to view the post inside the editing area. The link to the post shows a blank page as well. Basically, everything on the user side is blank.

It doesn't give any "page not found" errors, though. it's just blank.

    thanks!

hmm...well I'd be happy to try installing it for you if you want but personally I don't know what could be wrong. My best guess is redownload the wordpress 2.6 version, kill the database and make a new one.

Then setup the wordpress again as you should...

I turned off ALL of the plug=ins.... BUT I did have the site set to a downloaded theme when the upgrade took place... and in order to start all over...I DID delete all themes and accept the basic ones downloaded with 2.6.1... Now what is so wrong with that...
The upgrade went correctly...said upgraded database completed..etc...
NOW...a BLANK main page... should be a simple fix here...NOT Download it all again and delete the database and start all over...BLAH !
NO WAY.... Someone has got the expertise and answer here...

I thought you said this was a fresh install, and not an upgrade. You're kinda confusing me now. It looks as if you want to upgrade it to 2.6 or 2.61 or something with an existing database in place.

IF there was a miscommunication, and you DID mean "fresh install"..then why is it such a difficulty to remake your database. All you need to do is fill out that form on your host and wala, edit your wp-config.php file accordingly...and upload...

Hi Vietknight. No, there are two of us with the same problem. Mine was on a fresh install, and i'm going to start over again tomorrow.

Steverf is the one who had problems upon updating.

    Thanks.

Well, I have a problem with mine. My dilema was so bad that I deleted my old version and installed a new one that was fresh. Now I want to know from anyone if you can please how to copy my old files to my new files. I know I can do it with FileZilla of course - thankfully I had the forsight to be able to download my entire wordpress files before I deleted them from my server. I would still like for people to see my old posts and comments without me having to re-type them all in etc.
I am a newbie with all this jazz and did all right with the last installation - though don't remember how I did it - think I must have fluked it somehow!
    Thanks

    Yes, he is correct.
I am the one that did the upgrade and I still have a BLANK forum page... PITS
and I trusted the upgrade procedure....
    Big Mistake...
It did update my DB and says I am ready to go "No Update Needed"...
and it does take me back to my main page...however, it is BLANK..hehe
    Wonderful....
Is there something in the base startup files that tell WP what theme to use.... maybe it is trying to use one of the several old themes I had installed and deleted for the upgrade ?

    ANY EXPERT HELP ?

    *** PROBLEM SOLVED ***
OK, for my Upgrade problem with a BLANK INDEX page showing...
I went to my site this way... http://www.MYSITE.com/YOUR WP DIR/wp-login
I ran the LOGIN script as indicated above and CHANGED the THEME to CLASSIC. Exited and went back to my site...
VIOLA.... The page came up just fine and everything is there , all users, all posts..etc... Seems the upgrade was confused from a previous THEME.

Now all I have to do is change the way a user sees WP just after logging in...but that will be another topic...

Ok, I'm still back at square one. We started over and installed a fresh copy. Same result.

We started over an installed a previous version, which is running fine on another site we have (also hosted by Dotster). Same result.

The home page is blank. No errors, just blank.

It's not a database problem, as it saves and allows me to edit my posts. It appears to be a rendering problem. I can select a theme, but the preview panes for the themes are blank, too.

Any thoughts? Please help! I'm chomping at the bit & ready to get going. Thanks!

When I had a blank page I deleted all my Themes, installed only the included ones and went to the login page directly and selected the classic theme to get everything started... after that I loaded a couple of themes, went back and logged ina nd selected a new theme...then my main page was ok....

    @ cabachona

Maybe try copy/pasting your content folder into the new wordpress directory.

Is your old wordpress messed up or something? What exactly is wrong with it?

It's hard to repair a wordpress by just installing a new version of wordpress and transferring files. There's a database that needs to be taken into consideration etc.

Best way to do it is the way majority of people do it.

So, I finally got mine working. Turns out that Dotster tech support didn't know what they were talking about when they said I'd have no problems installing WP on a Windows server. Once I decided to listen to my gut and switched to linux hosting, it worked like a charm.

I'm not marking this thread resolved since there are other people with issues posting here.

Thanks for your offer of help, vietknight!

    @cabachona

If you still have your DB intact, just put the directory "wp-content" and the file "wp-config.php" back into the installation and it should work like it use to.

I would recommend copying the values from wp-config.php and adding it to the new one instead of replacing as the config file that comes with the latest versions have some additional information such as security keys, etc..

    @cyanalab, @bminternetservices

I'd suggest removing all the other themes other than the default theme folders from wp-content/themes directory.

    Hope this helps..

I just got through initial install, got a Blank homepage. Reinstalled, same result. All other features worked. Did an upgrade. Same result. Got bored and wandered through all directories, saw many missing files. Uploaded all misssing files. It now works. FTP on windows servers can drop file uploads. I knew this, it just didn't occur to me that would be the problem. Hopefully this helps some of you with the same problem. :)

    Hey all,

Jim W is spot on here. Firstly check all your files have uploaded correctly.

For those of you who are experiencing problems with your theme, i.e. your old theme displays a blank page.. but your dashboard etc is all accessible. Then upload your theme again (replace all current files/overwrite).

If you are still not having much joy. Try using a different theme. It could be that your old theme is not compatible or any other range of issues I guess.

But this problem seems to be largely in relation to the theme you have applied.

    Cheers!

@TaxPolicy - it's working now. After renaming index.php to something that wordpress couldn't find, trying to access a page (which of course failed), putting [blog_root]index.php back, AND reloading the [blog_root], it displayed just fine.

    Hi Everyone,

I am working on to start my own blog at http://www.ilearnttoday.com

    My host is DOTSTER

    My wp-admin section works fine.

But the blog (www.ilearnttoday.com) shows a blank page.

This is NOT an update of an existing blog. This is a NEW Installation.

I have ALREADY tried following and NOTHING WORKED so far :-(

Installed wordpress latest version SEVERAL TIMES.
Installed wordpress old version (thinking the host doesn't support new wordpress version)
Renamed Pluggins directory to make it invisible to wordpress
    Changed the theme to Classic

If this helps, I chose IIS server and I install my blog on the wwwroot itself (NOT inside a directory)

I am desperate to get my blog up and running. Please Please Please help me!

Really looking forward for your help...
