I bought the WP-Members plugin from this site wpmembershipservice.com but they now asking me FTP login/pass and Admin login/pass.
I don't understand if they are just a scam site or not.

After I research I figured out they are just an installation service company.
So, Is WP-member plugin they want to install the same I can download from free here?
Can I trust them giving them my login and passwords?

Thanks.. I'm new to wordpress and I think they ripped me off. :(

http://www.wpmembershipservice.com has been installed in over 200 domains the plugin successfully. It's not scam. If you read carefully, you can see "it's an installation service" on the main page.

    Best Regards.

And also, this plugin have a lot of powerful features, you can easily understand it's not free WP Members plugin.

Well I understand that and I realized the free wp-member was very basic.. It's just the thing of asking FTP username and password and Admin user / password sounded weird to me. There should be another way to do it.

Because, it's an installation service. If you are new to WordPress, this is advantage for you. You don't need to worry about plugin because We'll install and activate for you safely.

Ok I sent you my info, but it's test site. I want to test it and learn about the plugin before I try for real. I can switch the domain later, right?

So this plugin is not the WP-Members plugin I linked to above?

    No Michael, it's not.

okosto, you might want to reconsider the name of your plugin. Since we released WP-Members in 2006 (the free plugin that Michael referenced above), several other "commercial" plugins have been released with similar names, WP Member (2 of these), WP Member Site, and yours, which apparently has the same name.

Naturally, when someone comes to wordpress.org for support, it is assumed that they are speaking of the free, open source version that is available at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-members/.
You could save everyone a lot of confusion by changing the name to something dissimilar.

I would like okosto to address this issues.I bought a plugin from http://www.wpmembershipservice.com, but was careful like mirkojax to submit my FTP info.I sent them a ticket stating my concerns. I later got this confirmation email that my payment was received..."This is an automatic notification from WordPress Membership Software to olatrop (myemail.com). This is a notification to inform you that your payment was successful for a one-time payment of 59 USD for 1 years. For more information please contact membershipservice@gmail.com ".
After reading this email, I opened another ticket requesting for clarification as this plugin was advertised to be a one time purchase on their site Terms and Conditions
As i got no response to my two tickets, I started researching about their authenticity then found this forum and went ahead to send my FTP info like the poster above. It,s over 24hrs max as stated on their site and yet no plugin on my site. I need http://www.wpmembershipservice.com to install my plugin as I have already send 3 tickets. I would appreciate your response okosto.

Olatrop good to hear... I have a few questions myself about this plugin... are they reselling a plugin already out there? If so which one is it? I think this reseller, or developer... not sure what it is would be GREAT to work with. They give video tutorials and stuff, but I would like to know if you can link to an affilate system with their plugin and what is the actual plugin??? Its confusing that they have commision URLS to other membership programs on their site, but I really would like to learn more about them.

Its extremely dishonest to create a plugin then give the name of one that already exists that everyone thinks is free. And if it takes 3 service tickets and a post @ wordpress.org to get installation, that's speaks volumes about the developer.

If someone installs a plugin they will usually require both admin access and ftp access. (one for uploading, the other for activating, testing and customizing)

But if someone has to deceive me to get my money - well, I don't want them to have access to either.

    Rename your Commercial plugin.

Michael thanks. People need to know there are lots of plugins that are free, that can be installed alone.

The plugin they install is actually "your membership" They seem like they are very into reselling that product, but they are unresponsive

Unfortunately there is no right plugin available for free that best support to manage wordpress membership site.

And also most of the premium membership plugins are encoded and they having various restrictions where they installed so they are not working as they are promised

Finally i found a premium wordpress membership plugin comes for 35$ ,threre are lot of other good things but only thing i can specify here is ( the source code is not encoded ) so it can be easily integrated with your blog than other membership plugins

you can consider to purchase if you are not bothering about 35$ dollars for building up your membership site

But being build on the open source platform i am still waiting for the promising membership plugin available for free of cost

http://www.wpmembershipservice.com has been reselling Your Members without our permission, sometimes as Your Members, sometime billed as WP-Members (but using the Your Members code). This is completely unconnected with the original WP-Members plugin from SmartMediaPro.

If you've come into possession of a copy of Your Members in this way (easily identifiable as the plugin admin page shows news from "Cambridge New Media Services") then please contact sales@newmedias.co.uk .

Whilst we are also investigating a second company passing off modified versions of Your Members as their own, we are currently only looking for people who obtained it from wpmembershipservice.com, though if you are in any doubt about the legitimacy of your copy you are welcome to email us to check

... and of course, if you're looking for one of the best wordpress membership plugins available, check out (the real) Your Member at http://www.newmedias.co.uk

Glenn - The "original WP-Members plugin from SmartMediaPro" is not "the original." As I mentioned above, I released "the original" WP-Members four years ago (2006) and it is available through the WordPress plugin repository at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-members where it was approved for inclusion in 2007.

There have been several commercial plugins floating around with the same or very similar names, but as near as I can tell, none of those came on the scene before 2008. Additionally, I have looked at a couple of them and they are NOT open source which is a clear violation of the GPL licensing of WordPress itself.

While I have nothing against these plugins from a feature and functionality standpoint, I do find it bothersome that they (1) are not GPL and (2) are hijacking the name of a freely available plugin that predates their release by 2-3 years.

We have had issues with other companies using the name of our plugin and we do have a department that takes care of making sure that these "companies" cease and desist in using our plugin's name.

We have released and have been developing our plugin for almost 3 years now, as with other software and services that we offer. Wwe've had numerous satisfied and happy customers and what we want to do right now is to find a solution and offer a compromise so that we can make it work for everyone.

The crux of the issue here is how btphelps have found it difficult to install the system, since his host does not have IonCube as a standard. We have given instructions on how to achieve this however we also inform them that we can do a free install to assist them if they weren't quite sure on how to do it. We also offered free hosting as a solution if the host (such as free domains on GoDaddy) would not allow IonCube installs.

We were offering solutions, we were giving options and we were trying to work and cooperate with you. It is rather unfortunate that this had to be brought to public.

Take it back to us. Raise a ticket and I assure you that I will handle it personally and will involve our senior manager to take care of this.

@ian.smartmediapro: I think you meant to post this in a different thread.

But since you posted here, I will tell you that my issue with your company's plugin is two-fold:

    1. You mentioned that wp-Member has been in development for three years. At that time, WP-Members was already included in the wordpress.org plugin repository, so some simple research prior to naming your product would have saved us all a lot of hassle and confusion. (I am giving you the benefit of the doubt here as I am sure that you would not have intentionally named your commercial plugin the same as one in the repository, would you?)

    2. The fact that your plugin requires ionCube shows that your plugin is not open source and therefore not compliant with the GPL license of WordPress.

@cbutlerjr - When we started Smartmediapro and WP-member, we had our research team look for similar named products and we found WP-members. Our company founder contacted the company owner and founder and we have come to the compromise and he has stated that it was perfectly alright for us to use the name.

The GPL license has always been open for debate. I believe that there are a lot of opinions about this and suffice to say, a resolution would take a long time coming.

That's interesting since I am the developer of WP-Members and I have never been contacted by anyone from smartmediapro.

As far as GPL license, you are incorrect. It is pretty clear that a derivative work must also be GPL licensed. If your plugin is not able to stand on its own without WordPress, it's a derivative work.

I can ask our company owner and founder to forward the several email correspondences if you would like.

We would assume that there have been no changes in the ownership of WP-members because we had, in good faith, contacted them previously and we have come to a summation that we had authority and the blessing (written and documented) to use the name WP-member. Had there been changes in the proprietorship of aforementioned name, and there are concerns regarding the usage of the name, one would surmise that the proper road to take is to contact us, SmartMediaPro and come to the table to talk about a resolution on the matter.

If you are indeed the owner and founder that we have contacted previously, you would have a copy of the correspondence. If there is a concern and you feel that there needs to be a change on the previous resolution we have had, please contact us and we shall resolve this within proper and correct processes without being public.

On a note, we have contacted wpmembershipservice.com previously due to the fact that they have lifted our product description verbatim and we have called their attention to it. We have processed this legally and they have been selling a product called Your Member/Your Members that is completely different from the plugin that is mentioned here.

There have not been any changes of ownership. I developed WP-Members in 2005, publicly released it as a plugin in 2006, and it was approved for inclusion in the wordpress.org plugin repository in 2007. This predates your company's plugin release. It would have been pretty easy for you to find me had you attempted to do so.

I have had no such contact from you, nor would I have made such concessions. Whoever you contacted (if it was anyone at all) was not me.

we shall resolve this... without being public.

    Much like your source code?
