   I thought I had loaded/unzipped/installed every program necessary to use WP. when I go to /wp-admin/install.php I get "install.php could not be opened because it is not a supported file format".

   I get the error message whether from the browser or the program file. It tries to open in Microsoft Picture It! 10 and I get the 'not supported file format'.

   Did you upload all the files to you website?

   you open the url in your browser
   http://example.com/wp-admin/install.php

   if it still tries to give you that error message then one must assume php is not set up on the server
