I'm reasonably computer literate, but these installation instrcutions are like gobbledigook to me.

I have a wordpress.com blog, so I assume that I have the minimum requirements.

I don't understand what is meant by having access to my web server. I clicked on download and saved wordpress to my program files folder, is this what I'm supposed to do ? Why won't it run like any normal software ? Apparently I'm supposed to "unzip it" but the instructions for doing this might as well be written in Japanese.

I really need an idiots step by step guide for the whole installation process written in plain English. Can some kind soul point me in the right direction ?

    Incorrect.

wordpress.com and wordpress.org are not the same thing. wordpress.com is for blogs hosted on wordpress.com. wordpress.org is for blogs hosted on your own server.

I don't understand what is meant by having access to my web server.

If you don't understand that, you're probably not ready to self-host WordPress. This isn't a value judgment! It's a technical requirement: IF you self-host WP, you will be expected to be able to support it and do the various things that need doing.

If you're hell bent on self-hosting, start here: http://codex.wordpress.org/New_To_WordPress_-_Where_to_Start

People are still going to assume you understand things like how to get to your web server, upload files, etc.

If all that makes your head spin, go back to wordpress.com and let them do the tech side so you can concentrate on writing. :)
