I’ve been trying to move from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. bought a domain from wordpress itself and i’m hosting it on iPage at the moment. I’m trying to install wordpress.org and uploaded all the files using FTP but whenever i try to access mydomain.com/wp-admin/install.php it immediately redirects it to my domain.wordpress.com/wp-admin/install.php and the page says “It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?”. I’ve been trying a LONG time and I can’t seem to install it at all. I even tried to do the one step wordpress installation on iPage itself but it just redirects me back to the dashboard for wordpress.com. Anyone can help with troubleshooting and how i can actually complete the installation? Currently stuck at step 5 and not moving on.

    Hello upandadrift,

My name is Melissa and I am the Social Media Manager here at iPage. We’ve been keeping an eye out on the forums to see about assisting customers wherever we can.

It sounds like with the move over the database has not been connected and because of this the WordPress files are trying to get you to install. Have you created and imported the database as of yet? If not, you can create a database via MySQL Database in the control panel and then login to phpMyAdmin to import your database backup. You then will want to go to the File Manager and seek out the wp-config.php file and update the connection details to the new database name and your host of -yourusername-.ipagemysql.com.
Please note – with both your moved files and your one step install – the domain is likely still pointing at your old host, so the changes made on our side will not be visible or accessible via your domain until you update the nameservers to ours and propagation has completed. You can check the files using -yourusername-.ipage.com while waiting for propagation to complete, but due to the saved pathway nature of WordPress, you will not be able to login as it will always want to redirect to your domain.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks so much for the response. I’m facing some problems with importing the database on phpMyAdmin when I go to my wordpress dashboard and export the .xml file. I’ve tried this several times now still not working :\

I get this error message upon importing: “There seems to be an error in your SQL query. #1064 – You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>”

    What do i do ?

Could you please mention your site url. Have you changed your DNS servers for your site to point to your current server from WordPress.com

    Hey Saravanan,

    upandadrift.com is the URL

I’ve changed my DNS server on ipage to ns1.wordpress.com and ns2.wordpress.com (it was previously ns1.ipage.com) and under Domain Management on wordpress the namer servers are ns1.wordpress.com. Did I do anything wrong ?

Sorry I’m a complete newbie doing this so struggling quite a bit… :\

If you are hosting on ipage servers, your DNS should point to the ipage name servers (ns1.ipage.com).else it will redirect to the wordpress.com site and you will not able to access the files on your host. So change the DNS to your host, wait for the DNS changes to propogate (usually an hour or so sometimes a day). Then try logging in and you should be able to log in to your site.

So i’ve tried to point the DNS to ipage name server as instructed and i get an email reading:

“The modifications you requested for the domain UPANDADRIFT.COM have failed.
    Error: Object does not exist’

I also waited a day to try again but still no luck. Then when i log in wordpress and try to change the name servers again it has already automatically switched back to the “Use WordPress.com Name Servers ” check box instead of the ones i manually entered.

Where did you buy the domain name and who is your registrar?

    Thread Starter upandadrift

    (@upandadrift)

Bought the domain directly from WordPress.com and hosted it on ipage

Then you might have to follow the instructions about moving away from wordpress.com. This might help you.
