   I have a client with an installion of Joomla running at http://www.example .com.

   They want to switch to WP (of course!), if I first install WP in a subdirectory like http://www.example.com/wp this will not effect the current Joomla site in the root will it?

   You shouldn't have any problems with that setup - people run WordPress out of subdirectories all the time, whether it's to transition or to use it for the blog component of a non-WP site.
