Install problem

I edited the wp-config-sample.php file, changed the name to wp-config.php, but when I run the install.php file I get the following error right away. I looked at lines 2 & 3 of the install.php file, and they look correct to me, so I am at a bit of a loss. The error messages I get are:
: No such file or directory
./install.php: line 2: =: command not found
: command not found 2:
./install.php: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token '../wp-config.php''
'/install.php: line 3: if (!file_exists(‘../wp-config.php’))
Any suggestions anyone?
