   I have wordpress installed in my root directory. Can I install wordpress again in a subdirectory without disturbing my root?

   Yes you can they will two independent installs If I was you I would install manually so that you do not have problems.

   I set up a new database for the install but I noticed that the original install has the main database and an information schema. My concern is creating a separate information schema with the the new install. Is there something special I would need to do?

   You just create another database for your 2nd install no need to create another information schema as that created by server.
