I am creating a website for a client and am using the categories to control where content shows up on the website. Simple stuff right? Well I go this bright idea to let the theme install its own set of categories. That way when I set up the site and install the theme the categories needed to make the theme work are prepopulated. Has anyone done this before?

I'd recommend you consider Post Formats that are going to be released with Version 3.1.

I have some sort of solution for a similar problem with custom fields. But I only managed to change the display of a category based on the category id. Not sure if it works with the pre-defined category name.

for example if I have category video, it displays a full wide page, without the right sidebar. But I only control this after I have added the categories and know the category id.
