I used to use cutenews for my blog. To insert the blog into a page, all you did was dropped in one line of php code.
Can I do that with wordpress? Can I drop the blog into a cell on my main page table without making that page into a template?

No, you can not.
What you want can be done but it will have disadvantages.
Go to my blog and read the first article in the recommended lists (my "picks").

This guide is not a tutorial for integrating your blog via iframes or displaying your posts through RSS feeds or, by using different “recent posts” techniques and plugins.
Funny, because that is exactly what I was trying before.
Those are all valid techniques - I just didn't write about them.
