index.php page navigation to older posts

Please can some one help I am struggling to get the code for a page link to older posts on my index.php (preferablly as a range of page numbers) I have seen it on other themes where there are x amount of posts on the frontpage then 1,2,3,4,5.. pages etc to go to an overview of older posts.
