I'm asked to install a wordpress themes and work on the them by a client. he has a vps and have it run on debian. apache2.xx and php5 properly installed. alot of security setting are also installed i think.

the problem is that the wordpress is not loading Index.php. the home page. but other categories and pages are loading fine. when i google it, people suggest me to add [ Directoryindex index.php ] in .htaccess . but when i add it, the internal server error 500 show up.

    I then check dir.conf in apache2, [ directoryindex index.php] is there. when i check the httpd.conf in apache2, [ SSlCertificatechainfile etc/ss./certs/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.ca-bundle ]

I just don't know how to proceed anymore. if anyone can help, would be very appreciate.

    regards

at first delete .htacess file as you can make it later.
    Then go to localhost/wp-admin folder.
    Login at there.
    Change the theme.

You could also try disabling any plugins, if any are installed, in case action hooks are interfering with the page.
