    Hello,

I created a child theme earlier today and I read in one tutorial that you must copy the index.php file from your parent theme into your child theme along with the style.css file in order to work. Once I moved (what I thought) was the proper index.php file into my new child theme my site now looks like the following: http://www.listenherereviews.com

The theme that I am trying to work with is the Twenty Eleven Theme.

In my Dashboard all of my posts are still there. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want my site back as soon possible.

    Lauren

Can you move back the index.php file to the original location?

There's no "must" when it comes to template files in a child theme. The only file you MUST have is a style.css file. Everything else is optional and depends upon what you want to change.

    Have you reviewed child themes?

Yes, I have looked at plenty of tutorials and all of them have come up broken. Only one so far as mentioned the index.php file.

Then that tutorial is wrong. General rule of thumb: only trust tutorials on wordpress.org.

That's what I figured after the mix up. I can't seem to find the location of the file. Would emptying the site and starting over fix it?

Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Did you move the index.php from the WordPress main folder?

Do you mean from the unpacked zip folder?

Do you find some files just below the main folder named WordPress? Do you have a file named index.php there?

No. I'm using Dreamhost FTP and the only WordPress files I see are wp-admin and wp-content. I found an index.php in the FTP Host section, but when I tried to move that file it said that it could not be found.

Try reinstalling WordPress manually from a freshly downloaded copy except wp-content. Do not overwrite files/ folders but delete them before reinstalling.

Use FTP or your hosting control panel. Backup your site including database so that you can restore in case anything goes wrong.
