Increasing main content width and/or flexible width? (6 posts)

I've searched this forum, and read some of the posts regarding adjusting the width of several elements in Admired theme.

The posts about how to decrease the width are helpful, but I need to increase the width. This involves more than just balancing components out to fit the magic 1010px number. I suppose I need to increase the entire container(paqe?) and then also bump up the content size.

I think most of my changes need to be made in style.css, under the structure comment section. Style.css is like 3000 lines long, so I'm hesitant to use trial and error. There are a few magic numbers like 1050px, 1012px. And I'm thinking of modifying the page, header(multiple?!), and content sections.

I'm close, but I barely know what I'm doing here.

One other thing: I thought this was supposed to be a flexible width theme? Is it only flexible width with SMALLER than ~1000px displays? I had previously used one that would adjust dynamically to (any?) size screen.

I'm using just a single sidebar on the right hand side.

    Thanks!

You can create a custom.css file with the changes you need and just make sure that it is linked after all of the other stylesheets for your theme. That way you leave the original theme's CSS in tact. I could give more css specific suggestions if you post a link.

Using a child theme or custom CSS plugin is a better way to do that.

Absolutely, thanks for making that clear.

The link to my site is http://www.techtravels.org

I definitely need some specific suggestions on what to modify. I've got an approximate idea what to do, but the change seems spread out enough, that if someone could identify exactly what needs done would be really helpful!

    Thanks

I suppose I need to increase the entire container(paqe?) and then also bump up the content size.

Changing the layout of a responsive theme is often fairly complicated - so unless you are quite familiar with CSS, you may want to rethink this. Extensive custom CSS may be beyond these forums unless someone opts to offer that level of support.

And for sure, don't modify theme files without using a Child Theme as your changes will be lost when the theme is updated.
