Consider profiling your sites with a tool (I like http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ myself) and examine the results. That can tell you where you need to focus on such as reducing the size of your image files.
Caching plugins typically help speed up your site too.

If you are proficient at running your own web server then mod_pagespeed
is a quick and easy way to get your site optimized automatically on the server level.

mod_pagespeed
can be a little much if you don’t have Apache2 server experience. 😉

David, thanks for the help but it’s frowned upon when your replies send forum members back to your own site. It creates the appearance of using the support forums to promote your own site.
Note that I am not accusing you of that or any ill will. But I am sure you can see how that those links can be misconstrued.
Can you please keep support here or at least avoid using URLs that send people to your site or sites that you run or are active in?
Fair enough but it’s not practical to regurgitate a 950 word article.
