   I am working on my site on my own server on my computer. But I am getting linked to by other people's bots.

   I am also getting news and updates, which I don't mind, but I am wondering if I am online or not. I must be, if things are coming in from "the outside".

   Can someone give me some insight?

   Check your privacy settings. http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Privacy_SubPanel News and updates is normal.
