Basically I have my blog installed in my /blog directory. What I would like to do is, in my root directory I have a page (the soon to be index)...I want to include the title/ of the post, maybe a line or two followed by a Read More link...and possibly the category link of the blog. Also, how could I style it?

Do a google search for magpie RSS. It will let you grab your blog's feed and put the most recent titles/excerpts wherever you want.

Hmm, while I am not a complete starter at web stuff, (though I haven't done much real php work)...I can't figure out how to use that..?

Also is there any other way to do it?

    See "integration" at
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page#Integrating_WordPress
    for some more ideas.

I use the feedburner option mentioned towards the end.

    not an easier way...

of course, if you moved your WP out of /blog...and used a wordpress "page" as your default page, then you'd achieve something very similar, but easier to play around with.
