In the_excerpt(), “Read More >>” links to somewhere unexpected?

Hi everyone,

For category listing pages on my blog, the title of each excerpted post links to the_permalink() correctly, but the “Read more >>” link at the end of the_excerpt() links to http://www.[blog_name]/?p=NNN , which is not what I want at all.

How can I make the_excerpt() make the “Read More >>” link point to the_permalink(), as it really ought to?

Worse still, the_excerpt() is synthesizing the URL from long-lost fields in the database held over from the (bad old) Blogger days: and so is linking to a site which hasn’t been there for months. :-(((
