• Calling all WordPress experts! I’m in dire straits and need help!

My fault. I erased the database tables in phpmyadmin.
I have an SQL backup saved on my desktop.

Can someone offer a step-by-step “hold my hand” tutorial on how to restore this SQL backup using phpmyadmin?

I appreciate you all and thank you in advance!

If you are sure the original db is hosed and is totally empty, you can restore the backup to it, however if there’s any chance that it still has your data in it, you don’t want to overwrite (just in case there is a problem with the restore) it so it would be safer to create a new empty one and change your wp-config to point at that one.

It sounds like you have dropped your tables though, so here is what I would do.

Log onto phpmyadmin & connect to the correct database.

Zip the backup file (if it is not already zipped of course) using a standard zip application such as 7zip. This may not be necessary if the file is small, but this depends on the server setup.

In the main pane you should see barious tabs click on import & you will see the “file to import” screen.

Click [browse] & locate the zipped backup file on your desktop.

Click the Go button at the bottom of that window to upload the file and import the data.

Hopefully that will do it. Good Luck!

note: If the backup you have is old or there is a problem restoring it, it will be worth asking your web host whether they have db backups. Hopefuly this won’t be necessary.

Thank you, cubecolour! If this is what being a part of the WordPress community is, I WANT to be a part of it!
Thank you also for taking time to attend to my issue so quickly.

I will go ahead and try what you suggested, with fingers crossed!
