Importing WXR brings down the whole site (2 posts)

    Hi,

I migrate a site from wordpress.com to a domain (ulloi129.hu) onto a huge server (4 Xeon, 8Gb ram), but the importing process more often than not brings the whole site down completely, like this morning (while importing a 250k file it ate up all the memory). It is a WP multisite (but currently there's only one blog on it) with Buddypress and about 10000 articles and 400000 comments.

The importing, even when it does work is extremely sluggish, I have to split the WXR export into 300-500k long files.

(The site as a whole eats up memory like a hungry pitbull.)

Is there any solution for this?

  2. Just because your server has 8gb of RAM doesn't mean that all 8gb have been allocated to PHP. Here are three ways to increase PHP's memory allocation:

    1. If you can edit or override the system php.ini file, increase the memory limit. For example, memory_limit = 256M

    2. If you cannot edit or override the system php.ini file, add php_value memory_limit 256M to your .htaccess file.

    3. If neither of these work, it's time to ask your hosting provider to temporarily increase PHP's memory allocation on your account. Keep in mind that most decent hosting providers allocate 32 MB to PHP under each account, and most decent hosting providers allow users to temporarily increase the memory allocation. If your hosting provider won't accommodate you, perhaps it's time to find a new hosting provider.
