Importing WordPress blog to WordPress site

I had an existing blog through WordPress. I recently purchased a hosting on Ipage, which directed me to install a new WordPress. I am trying to get all of my old posts, pictures etc. from my old blog to my new site.
I have an .xml file from my old blog.
When I try to import it, it is telling me that it already exists. However, when I view my posts and pictures, none of them are there.
Here is the process I went through:

Tools > Import > WordPress
Chose my xml file and clicked import
Import Author: Assign posts to an existing user: *My username*
Submit

Am I doing something wrong?
