Importing from WordPress.com (8 posts)

I am in the process of migrating nataliehanson.wordpress.com (hosted on wp.com) to my domain nataliehanson.com (hosted at domainit.com). The site layout is a wreck, but my issue right now is actually content.

On my WP.com site I have 62 posts (plus 28 drafts) and 343 media items (4 unattached). I exported uneventfully, the file was less than 1.2 mb, but when I went to re-import it failed. My hosting provider gave me more memory and I was able to overwrite the original files and get it all uploaded. It did take me multiple attempts, so one question is whether I need more memory from my host? HOWEVER, the bigger issue is that now none of the images are linked to the posts (300+ unattached pics!).

I'm not sure how best to proceed now.

    (1) Do I need to get a clean, single install of all files? If so, is there a way to delete the whole XML file again? If it fails again I know I need to ask my hosting provider for more memory again.

    (2) Will a new upload fix the connection between posts and pics, or is there something else I need to do to get this working?

Don't want to have to manually link pics to posts! :( So any help would be much appreciated ...

My hosting provider gave me more memory

And how much PHP memory do you have available now?

Thanks esmi - I didn't ask, and I can't seem to figure that out from the PHP Admin area. I have requested more, though, since it's exhibiting the same sort of hanging behavior as it was before.

Any idea if I can simply reupload and overwrite what's there, or if I'll need to somehow delete the content before trying again?

You'll need to delete the content that was imported - otherwise you'll get loads of duplicated posts, comments etc. Have you had a look at:

Not sure if it still works but it might be worth a try.

Any idea how to delete the posts? I'm pretty comfortable with FTP and/or digging around in my folder structure, but I'm not sure where the XML gets stored once uploaded ... Or do I just manually delete posts, pages, and media from the Admin view and that will be sufficient?

Is there any other content in the site other than the stuff you imported?

I created a page structure (half a dozen pages or so, based on the structure of my old site) which I could pretty easily recreate if needed, and some small changes to the theme which could also be redone if needed.

In that case, I think it would be easiest to empty the database and re-install WordPress. Make a backup copy of your current theme to retain a copy of your changes and re-upload the theme post-installation. That will, at least, reduce the amount of work you have to re-do.
