Importing from BROKEN Movable Type installation via SQL dump - can I? (3 posts)

I think the topic title pretty much says it all: I have a client who's been using Movable Type, and it's been screwing up horribly and now won't even let him or me log into the admin at all.

His web host is no help, and I want to move his blog to my web host and to WordPress, but I can't generate an export file without being able to log into the MT admin.

I do, however, have a complete backup of the MySQL database it was writing to. Is there some way I can import this directly into WP instead of having to use a Moveable Type export file?

Come on, someone's got to have faced this at some point... It's not like MT is the most stable thing out there, so I can't be the only one trying to import from a crashed installation of it!

I know this has to be at least theoretically possible...

I had the exact same problem after trying to upgrade Moveable Type -- my blog "broke" and I was no longer able to get into the admin system, even after trying to "re-upgrade". I was able to get a backup of the MySQL database, however, and found this post by Googling for a way to import from the MySQL dump. Unfortunately, I didn't find one.

I ended up creating a fresh install of Moveable Type in a different location -- absolutely no "overlapping" files. I created a completely new database, then completed the MT installation. I then imported my SQL dump into the new database and finally used MT to export my old blog entries so that they could be imported into WordPress.

It sounds tedious, but actually only took 20-30 minutes. Granted, that's far too long when Moveable Type is the culprit but it worked.
