I was switching webhosts. I did an export from WordPress and it created an XML of about 29mgs. After installing WordPress and switching nameservers I go to import the file. I go to Tools > Import and select the WordPress method. It opens a menu that is asking me to choose an WXR file. ANd it has a limit of 8MB. I don't have a file of that type and the file I have is much larger than 8MG. I tried just selecting my XML file but it doesn't work. So basically I have a file that WordPress exported that it won't import. What are my options? I don't have access to the old server now to do mySQL dump.

Also is the fact my file has the extension .XML going to be a problem?
You need the original .wxr file. And as far as I know, this is the only wxr splitter around. It's fairly new.

WHAT IS AN WXR FILE? Excuse my all caps but this is really frustrating. When WordPress exports its data it does it as an XML file NOT an WXR file. Put then when you go to import, WordPress asks for an WXR file. Is this the same thing? If so, why can't the same name be used for it? I do have the original file exported from WordPress--wordpress.2011-05-31.xml.

The file created by a WordPress export.
it should work once you've installed the wordpress importer plugin from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-importer/
the 8MB file size limit is imposed by your webhost. you might be able to change it by following the instructions at http://blog.paulgu.com/2008/09/03/increase-upload-size-in-your-phpini/
if that doesn't work, contact your hosts and ask them to raise the php upload and post size limits.
