Successful import of all posts and comments from Blogger. I didn’t realize that my Blogger template would be wiped, replaced with just the archive list and a link to WordPress.org. Just realized that my Blogger template back-up failed, overwritten accidentally! Is there any way to recover the Blogger template? I know I would have had to rework it for WP anyway, but I was hoping to leave my Blogger blog active for a few days while I update my new WP site.

  • I don’t know of a way to get back any custom Blogger theme, or any additions you’d made to one of the default ones (like links or ads or whatever), but if you can live with just having it be readable, you can go to Template and Pick New and assign one of the default templates.

It’s always hard to learn the lesson of how important backups are.

Thanks for the reply, FruitFly! I can’t believe I overwrote that file! I ended up Googling my site and looking at the cached file. Using the View CSS function on the Web Developer’s toolbar for Firefox, I was able to capture the style sheet and re-apply it to my Blogger template. Now I can keep the site up until I get settled on WordPress.

That toolbar is my favorite FF extension ever. Comes in so handy.

And congrats on a smart move. 🙂

Yes, congratulations. 🙂 You’ll love WP so much more.

Anyone else know how to get the REST of the stuff back? Blogger hacks, custom formatting, etc? Why would

WordPress copy the posts, but not the template, then hose up my template? I don’t get it. strongIt is nothing short of vandalism. Honestly, if this is how it operates, I will NOT use it, blow it off my server, and spend the 10 hours to rebuild my Blogger page.

The first step in a blogger import is to make a backup of your blogger template. I know that doesn’t help your situation, but don’t blame the WordPress team for your mistake.

The WordPress themes are not compatible with the blogger templates. The two systems are actually quite different – Blogger uses the template to format the html when you publish the content and WordPress uses the theme to format it when you view the content.

Any hacks you make to your blogger template cannot be imported to WordPress.

The whole point of switching to WordPress from Blogger is if you feel there is something WordPress will provide that Blogger doesn’t. If you are happy with Blogger then why switch at all?

If there are specific Blogger hacks that you have applied you can probably get some help here finding similar WordPress plugins. Yelling about it isn’t going to get you any help. Asking relevant questions will.

I had saved the template (following the instructions), but what the Codex doesn’t explain is that it is going to wipe it out on Blogger. So my Blogger site (still the main one) was down for about eight hours. The instructions really need to explain WHY you have to save the template, and that you will have to go back and reinstall it.

I also have a technical problem, in that the import has only taken the blog from 2004, not 2005 and 2006. Can anyone suggest what to do now?!
(The new blog is here: http://www.philobiblon.co.uk/ and the old one here: http://philobiblion.blogspot.com/, if either of those presents a clue…!)
