I've moved a site hosted on Dreamhost to a local desktop, the database is all hooked up and the site looks fine when I go to it from the local machine, but when I visit it from any other computer the images don't load on the pages (they just show up as empty boxes).

However, I can still get to the pictures from the same remote computer if I type in mysite.com/wp-content/uploads/year/...

The site url settings all appear to be correct; the site didn't actually change url address, I just moved the database and files and redirected the address to the new server. Any help appreciated.

Your desktop computer won't act as a server for your website, so that is why you can't properly view the website from a remote computer. Web hosting will allow you to do so, utilizing your domain name such as mysite.com, not "localhost".

I have WAMP installed and running, and port 80 forwarded to it; this isn't intended to be an actual blog so it's not going to be handling serious traffic. Is there some other mechanical reason it wouldn't work that I'm missing?

It would be difficult to troubleshoot without being able to set eyes directly on the site in question... just curious, why exactly you need to access from a remote computer? If you run WAMP and can access OK from your local machine, why not work from that machine and upload your changes to Dreamhost when finished?

A friend wants to show that she can build and handle a WordPress site for a job application, and rather than paying for a year of hosting I want to set up a server just so she can use it as a reference. It's not intended to be a long term thing.

I can get to the wp-content directory directly from a browser on a remote computer and the pictures show up fine, and the wp-content settings are set to the default location which should just be looking in the wordpress directory.. is it possible the picture links in the pages could be wrong? As far as I know they're just pointing to url/wp-content/uploads

I suggest you purchase hosting for your needs. You mentioned Dreamhost, do you already have an account? They have a 2 week free hosting trial too...
