Over the weekend, my wordpress featured images/thumbnails broke. I didn't update any code, didn't update my theme, didn't change any of my plugins. The images are there and can be loaded directly but can't be 'generated' to create the featured thumbnail on the fly.
Could someone give me any suggestions of what to look for to resolve this?

The current workaround is to actually disable the featured image/thumbnail and just insert a regular image into the page as a thumbnail at the top left of the content. Not exactly how we want to be doing it.
Can someone suggest an alternative for why the featured images are showing up as broken, when I can see them in the backend?
