   I'm really not very crafty with wordpress so I tend to not go poking where I don't belong, so I'm not sure what could have caused this problem. For some reason, just today, when I go to my site http://www.redtownphoto.com all of the preview thumbnails are broken links. Yesterday everything looked great, but today, nothing but broken icons.

   I checked multiple browsers to make sure it wasn't something with my preferences. Strange thing is you can click on any of the broken links and see the actual image, but when you return to the gallery thumbnails, all you see are broken links. Even more interesting is when I was editing the background page via the theme settings page. I purposefully deleted the background photo and re-added it to confirm that the preview of the 'current image' would break, and sure enough it did.

   My question is, how did this happen? and is it my theme that's causing the problem or something with wordpress in general? How can I fix this? Theme is Anan btw.

   I sure hope this is a temporary glitch and that everything is going to be back to normal when I wake up in the morning, but sadly I'm fearing the worst. Thanks so much for any help. (btw, probably worth mentioning I can't upgrade my WordPress because my host doesn't have required php version)

   Your theme uses the timthumb script to generate thumbnails and it is this script that is failing. You should also be aware that anything but the latest version of timthumb represents a very serious security issue on any site. See:

   Thanks for the reply esmi. My host had already identified that threat and replaced my timthumb.php file with the one created by Mark and Ben yet it is still broken. I manually replaced it again just now and still no luck. Anything else I could be missing?

   Impossible to say at a distance. Have you tried switching to the Twenty Ten theme to confirm that this is a theme-specific problem?

   I just got off the phone with my host and it turns out I can upgrade they do support php 5 so I upgraded wordpress, and my theme had a update so I installed the newest theme. For the most part everything is working correctly. Now it's only a few images that won't display the thumbnail, which is bizarre, since all of my photos are the exported the same (jpg, srgb, roughly same file size.) I tried removing the effected images and re-adding them, and they still display a broken thumbnail. I'm going to try re-exporting the photos with a different file name and see if that has any effect at all.
