I use Windows Live Writer to post and it writes absolute paths for all the images. However, when I use the WordPress editor to move an image, the path is changed to relative.
I would have expected WordPress to do the opposite, if anything, because changing image paths from absolute to relative is just incorrect. Once the images are moved, they are not displayed by the browser, because of the permalink structure.
