Image maps and custom post types

    I am creating a plugin to manage this effect, where each item on that tag map links to an item with a custom post type “sponsor”.
    I was told that WordPress has some built-in file/image upload functions, which will allow me to do image uploads and add metadata containing coordinates to the image, but I have not been able to find any documentation of them.
    Do such functions/hooks exist?
    Is there a better solution?
