Image Link URL shows code, not photo (7 posts)

I've researched this for weeks, but I can't find any other examples:

We recently upgraded to 3.0.1, we can upload images fine, the thumbnails show up in posts fine.

But when you click on the image to enlarge it, instead of the image, the screen fills with characters, apparently the IPTC metadata, interspersed with black diamonds with white question marks.

HERE'S A LINK to one of the images showing the problem.

However, the image appears normal when downloaded from the FTP folder:
    /wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files/2010/10/how-to-grow-up-rule-the-world.jpg

I've checked and updated the htaccess file for 3.0.1.

We can show the thumbnails in the posts without a problem, but we have to remove the Link URL to prevent readers from clicking and seeing this problem. That of course prevents better viewing of photos, and prevents us from effectively using NextGEN galleries — anything with images.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

That looks like it might be a server issue. Have you tried contacting your hosts about it?

    Thanks, esmi.

Unfortunately, our hosts don't provide support — we have to figure out the problem and order possible fixes, but that's all. That's why I'm in this support area.

I'm curious — why do you think it might be a server issue?

You got me thinking that perhaps it involves permissions in a folder (allowing ASCII but not binary). But that doesn't explain why the images show up OK in the image editor, and as thumbnails in posts.

It's only when you click on an image to enlarge it to its original size that all the garbage characters show up.

The focus of the problem seems to be the Link URL. Could the issue be in the rewrite rules in htaccess?

It sounds like the server is trying to display images as txt files or similar. That's usually a server config issue.

Could the issue be in the rewrite rules in htaccess?

I wouldn't have thought so but you could try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting and renaming your WordPress .htaccess file to see if that helps.

Still waiting for our hosts to get this fixed.

But meanwhile, esmi, can you tell me why the image appears IN THE BLOG POST but NOT when you CALL IT BY ITSELF?

Makes absolutely no sense to me with what I know of the Internet.

Again - could be a server issue when the server tries to send out a bare image.

OK thanks. Right now, we're working around it by removing URL links and employing gallery plugins.
