image cropping issue

Attached images are getting cropped to the thumbnail sizes as defined in the forums/attachments settings.
But NOT properly resized.
So you see images which are cut-off on all sides instead of resizing properly while maintaining the aspect ratio.

Is there any way to select to maintain the aspect ratio.
