    Try as I might, I haven't been able to get image captioning or descriptions to work properly on my blog. I Googled the problem and it seems to be a long-standing issue with WordPress....? Whenever I put the mouse pointer over the image I don't get customized alt text of ANY kind - just the filename. Can someone help a brotha out?

    When you upload the image, "title" is what will display when you mouse over, "alt" will not display but will be written in the code, caption will be below the image.

    I had a similar problem recently with captions not displaying after I changed themes, and it took me a while to realise the issue was in my stylesheet. Check your style.css for:

    .wp-caption{
    }
    .wp-caption img{
    }
    .wp-caption p.wp-caption-text{
    }

    If they're not there, this tutorial lists the default settings for the Kubrick theme; try copying them into yours...

    Worked like a charm...thanks for the help guys. But I am assuming that if my custom theme is updated I might have to replace this CSS code every time? Not a big deal if I do, since themes don't seem to get updated so often...but just want to know in advance.

    You can set up a child theme and not worry about the css changing.
