I either don’t understand what “Price Groups” are supposed to do, or I’m doing it wrong.
Testing locally, I added an image as big as the biggest I intend to sell.
I assigned it a license and a Price Group. I previously created a Price Group with four sizes, each size listing a different price.
When I went to “purchase” that image, I expected to see the 4 sizes and their corresponding prices listed in the “Size” drop down menu. Is that what’s supposed ot happen? All I have available in that menu is the Original, listing the original’s dimensions, and my default price which is NOT what I want the large size to sell for.
Do you think this a problem caused by running WordPress locally?
Am I completely missing the point of Price Groups?
Both WordPress and the SellMedia plugin are current as of this writing.
I’m also concerned by the point Bunzer raised in another thread – the resizing (once I get it working) isn’t proportional? I have a mix of horizontal and vertical images and they aren’t all cropped to the same aspect ratio. I’m used to Photoshop’s automated Image Processor tool where you define a maximum width or height value and the image is resized proportionally to those constraints. That’s not how SellMedia does it?
Thanks so much for any insights.

  • Hi Steve,

Yes, it seems that your using price groups correctly. Given that you have assigned a price group to the item and the upload size is larger than the price group, the additional sizes should show. My guess is that you may have not assigned a price group to an image.

I think Bunzer’s issue was that he was setting his images to be square.

Hello, Zane. Thank you SO much for your comments.
I’ll attempt to link to a screen capture of my sequence
Briefly – I created a price group in the settings pane. I uploaded an image and designated the price group. I don’t get choices in the menu.
At this point my only thought is that, since I’m evaluating this plugin locally, whatever you use for resizing images (ImageMagick maybe?) might not be part of my dev environment, preventing the plugin from offering those choices? I know it’s a long shot. Maybe the visual will help point out what I’m doing wrong.

If it comes down to a problem with a local testing environment I can set up a disposable subdomain for testing, but local is faster and easier! (BTW, I did update the plugin to 1.5.6 before posting this reply.)

On the other topic – how are we supposed to define size constraints for a given price/size in batches (for example, $15 gets you a vertical no taller than 800 px or a horizontal no wider than 800px) if putting 800px in both the width and height fields will result in an 800px square? Do we have to put in custom dimensions for every image?

Thanks a million for your help.

    Steve,

We’ve introduced an option for the “Default Price Group”, which is in the Settings -> Size & Price.

You don’t have to put sizes in for every image, just adding the ones that you want to sell should work.

Still wrapping my head around what price groups are. Could not find documentation on it. Great plugin.

@zane – I do not understand Your answer – I test the most new version of Sell Media and have the same issue as @bluecomet. I Do not understand at all the sense of price-groups and how to use it. It does not what the user expects. It always displays only the original file size at the checkout, although there are several size options defined in the Price group section.

Think of price groups like this:

You shoot photographs for a client or customer and you decide to create a special price group for all the photos that you shot. You could create a Price Group for this. Example:

    Price Group 1 (Cheap)
    – 1000 x 1000 px image, $10
    – 2000 x 2000 px image, $20
    – 3000 x 3000 px image, $30

    Price Group 2 (Expensive)
    – 1000 x 1000 px image, $100
    – 2000 x 2000 px image, $200
    – 3000 x 3000 px image, $300

Price Groups allow you to create and assign different price options to different photographs. You can also assign price groups en mass to an entire collection of images.

    Hope that helps!
