    Dear Support Folks,
I'm new to all of this. I've been using blogger and I want my own url so I looked on the forums and found cleverdot.com and got a domain (brehaspati.com) and hosting and set up the mysql database. (I called it blog, but it in the cpanel it calls it ugdt102_blog) I tried putting it into the form both ways, as blog and as ugdt102_blog and neither seems to work.
When I try and run brehaspati.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
    I get
    Not Found
The requested URL /public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/1.3.31 Server at http://www.brehaspati.com Port 80
I wonder a few things. Should I be setting up a new index file or a destination folder for wordpress besides public_html?
I've fussed around for a few hours and tried to figure it out to no avail.
Thanks for any help you can give me,
    Bre

Try leaving the "/public_html" out of the URLs when you type them into your browser... My WP install lies in the folder "/www" and I don't think I've ever typed that. :)

Just curious. when I go to your url http://www.brehaspati.com, it goes to cleverdot when it should go to the space that you own. Also, you would not run the install from brehaspati.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. You would run it from brehaspati.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. Another thing, I take it that ugdt102 is your username to log into cpanel. When you created the database blog, cpanel prefaced you user name to the database name, this is perfectly normal. Just enter you database name, username, and password to the config.php and the install shouls work. Did you link a user to the new database?

    Aha!
First I took the public_html out and I got the message that my config file wasn't working.
Then I redid the config file. Then redid it again with the ugdt102 thingy in there. That didn't work, but it did after I went to the cpanel and added the user to the database. I had the user and I had the database, but hadn't hooked them up.
Now I just need to figure out how to make it come up at brehaspti.com instead of brehaspati.com/wordpress.

I believe that would be a .htaccess thing. I would be the wrong person to ask about that

Sorry if I'm not seeing the big picture, but what about just "moving" all the files in the "public_html/wordpress" directory into the "public_html" directory?

Bre, that would be the best thing to do.

    hi --
i'm even newer and mo re confused. i'd like to set up a simple blog, mostly journal-type entries with maybe a pic or two, and i'm hesitant to use something like blogspot because i, too, would like my own url.
but i'm not really a tech person, and though this seems like a great site for people who are, i think you're all working at a level way over my head.
any suggestions for a place i can go for really, really basic capacities/instructions that will allow me my own url?
    thanks,
    julie

Well url or not, WP needs to be installed somewhere. This forum tends to field installation problems from a very small number of people with peculiar problems but generally even for a noob it is relatively simple. Just take one thing at a time. You can always ask if you get stuck. Go for it ;)

@julie - I've no idea which country you are in, but I bought my domain through http://www.easily.co.uk
Find a name you want and that's not been taken (not very easy at times), pay for it, then pay for webspace.
That'll give you the url, and some space to make use of it.
It's a learning curve though, but it's not too bad :)

Definitely give it a try. I didn't know anything when I first started, and I've got 4 installations running now. It's really not too difficult to get set up as long as you don't want to do a ton of customizations. Thats where you have to start studying a bit more! Good luck! :)
