Hi, just wondering if anyone knows of a good plugin to track how many times a link or links are clicked.

More specifically, what I'm wanting to do is offer a free ebook download in my sidebar and on another page and I'm wanting to track how many times someone clicked to download it.

Have any favorite plugins for this?

    Thanks

I recommend Google Analytics or WordPress.com stats.

You can grab the Google Analyticator plug-in or get the WP stats package that comes bundled with JetPack.

I have Google Analytics hooked up and have tried in the past to use it to track a file download, but I've had very little success.

I know I must be doing it wrong or missing something. If there's just a quick plug and play option that would be awesome... or a really good tutorial on how to do this with GA.

Here's a question - is the link to the e-book on the same domain as your site?

Yes. It'll be in my sidebar and also a page.

Well, if the link is on your domain, i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/ebook.pdf it should show up in your stats as another visited URL, just like any other page on your site. You don't need to do anything special in your setup, just install Google Analytics normally - either manually by pasting a few lines of code into your header.php, or using a plug-in. Unless I'm missing something I don't think there's much more to it than that.

Yeah but that's not tracking clicks, right? In that example wouldn't I have to set up a web page which includes the Google Analytics code in the header file so that I can track how many times that page has been visited?

The ebook would actually be a zip file download. Zip files and pdfs usually don't show up in the main GA area, just web pages which are visited are.

Ah, see, you know more about Google Analytics than I do! ;-)

I just found this, does it help?

How do I track files (such as PDF, AVI, or WMV) that are downloaded from my site?
