I have taken the advice of many forum members and run an html validator.
Seems that most of my widgets have invalid code. When I attempt to clean up by using the validator recommendations some of the widgets end up with no code or don’t work at all….

valid code that they input manually into their sidebar?

    fairly common.. and?

I suppose that would depend on what display issues you (or more importantly, someone else) might be experiencing. Ive seen invalid sites that look just fine, and ive seen sites that dont. Realize that having a valid site is one more step toward having a multi-browser friendly site.
