   I know html and css how do I approach changing the site look?

   Can how, can I add my css layout into the style.css? What is necessary from style.css?

   Or what is the most advisable, build my own and port in the voluminous wp styles or use the wp style and buld my design to snake in around it all.

   Thoughts?

   I usually find a good theme and then customize it to fit my needs - the HTML, CSS, images etc.. If you're comfortable with HTML and CSS you can accomplish anything with almost any theme. There are some great books out there on WordPress theme development and customization. You should check them out.
