• Hi there
I’m really sorry if this is not the right section to put this! Hopefully someone can help.

So I was trying to change the 404 message to something fun by changing the code in editor. It was going pretty well until I updated the page. And well, the short story is that now the entire website is white and I have no way to even log in to wordpress and change anything because Everything is white and goes nowhere. Like I cannot reach the site in any way.
This is the website of the organisation where I intern, and I’m very close to crawling under the table in pure shame and horror.

I did save back ups of the site on Google Drive yesterday, so that’s something. But is there anyway for me to get back in to where I can edit things? Or do I like have to create the page all over again?

    Halp?

  • if you have a backup of the original unmodified 404.php file, i would go into the server, remove the current 404 and upload the original.

Oh thank you so much for answering.
The thing is, I apparently can’t access the server. Literally only white screen appear 🙁

Do you have ftp access? That’s the way to upload the original file.

Not sure what that is. Sorry, I’ve been happy dabbling along thinking I’d figure everthing out on the go.
I’m not the sites original creator, only an admin.

I do however think I know what went wrong, so if I can only get back in(to the Matrix), I can fix it.

FTP access give your direct access to the server and files. Every site can be accessed this way, as long as you have the FTP address, username and password.

Do you have access to cPanel?

If you aren’t sure, you will have to ask someone within your organisation for this information.

Thank you, having this information is a great help, I’m sure.

Other than that I’m not sure of anything. And neither is anyone within the organisation. I’m afraid I’m the most qualified, so that say’s something.
I’ll try to find out who originally made the site!

    That’s a good idea.

If you can’t get hold of him/her, you may have to contact the hosting company, that’s if you are using one rather than relying on the person who made the site?

Once you have the info, make a record of it for the future.

    Good luck.

I’ll look for someone who knows something.

    Thank you!

if you have a development program such as netbeans or komodo you can try copying your code into that and see if any errors show up. it’s quite possible you just deleted a closing or opening bracket.
