when I upload a pic, i see that wp generates 4, small, medium and large + thumbnail. what if I want to generate just one? say medium. how can i do that? also is that recommended? the reason i want to do that is to limit the number of files in my server and keep the uploads folder tidy.
    thanks

I don't really get what you mean but I think you probably mean the Featured Image?

right, for featured image, wp generates all 4 sizes even though you'll be using just one, try uploading a pic and see in your uploads folder.

  4. I'm pretty sure that WordPress generates all those images by default. If you only want to generate the thumbnail, then what I would do is just upload the small size. WordPress creates smaller sizes, but never bigger ones.

WordPress generates multiple sizes (4) even though I will be only using two at most, say the actual size and a thumbnail. i have found an article about this here, not sure if it'll solve it in latest version:

    http://johnsonyip.com/wordpress/2009/12/02/how-to-stop-wordpress-from-automatically-making-multiple-sizes-of-the-same-image-you-uploaded/

PS: no with my theme and another plugin, i get over 6 versions of the same image each cropped differently
