• I just got wordpress yesterday and have spent most of today playing around with it. I installed a custom theme – no problem, but I can’t figure out the plugins. They are installed and I have tried activating one or two, but how do I actually get them on the page?

    Sorry to sound so un-techy!

nothin? not even a link to a tutorial? I feel like I’ve hunted all over the wordpress.org site and there’s no explanation.

I have, however figured out the widgets (mostly), just no luck on the plugins.

but how do I actually get them on the page?

Plugins are generally very task-specific. There is no generic answer. Are these plugins that came with the custom theme you mentioned? Perhaps working through the installation of one specific plugin would get you started in the right direction.

    Thanks for the tutorials.

I totally get how to upload everything. The plugins are showing up on my admin page without a problem. Under each plugin is an “Activate”, “Edit”, and “Delete” link.

One of the plugins I would like to use is called Shadowbox JS. It’s a slide show. I click on the Activate link and they change to “Settings”, “Deactivate”, and “Edit”.

I go back to my production WordPress site, reload it, no changes.

This has also happened with the WP-Print plugin that I downloaded, which I believe is suppose to put a link at the bottom of the page and create a printable version of the page/post.

Thoughts? Am I missing a step?

Thoughts? Am I missing a step?

It’s possible. Let’s start with wp-print. I use that one on a couple of sites . Most commonly, I would guess, would be the step where the code for the “print” feature, my need to be inserted in your themes files, or missing a step by not refreshing the permalinks after it is turned on.

Here are links to instructions for both, just in case you did not see them in the readme.

Read both the “installation” and the “usage” tabs on that page. Sounds like you have the installation ok, just make sure you refresh the permalinks… the usage part describes the actual code insertion into your theme. Some themes come with the code already in it, so when you activate the plugin it shows up without any further work, but most may not. If you tell me what theme you are currently using (or just post a link to your blog if you like) perhaps we can get that one sorted out first if the directions don’t pan out as planned.
