I edited someone's theme (10 posts)

So being new to WordPress I thought a great way to build a site would be to download a theme that is similar to what I need and edit it for my purpose. It has turned out very good - except in the footer.php the original designed has there credit and link. I do not want to take anything away from them but my client does not want this there.

So the problem is I cannot edit the footer, they have somehow locked it. What would be the proper think for me to do here - contact the designer and ask them if I can remove it, or because I have changed it so much, can someone tell me how to remove it, or at least edit it so it is not so prominent in the design, maybe underneath or something.

    Thanks.

It does say there "This theme is free to use and modify and does not include any support. " so go for it!

I am a bit stuck, I keep getting an error message when I try to remove it, any ideas why or how to do this? The message is "This can't be edited" or something like that.

May need to change file permissions or use FTP to access and change that file.

    Ach,
I am actually working on my computer, not online, I will upload when it's done, so I don't see how the ftp would do it (am I missing something?)

When I try to edit the footer.php I get this message

This theme is released under creative commons license, all links in the footer should remain intact. To remove this message, please re-upload footer.php file of this theme again or you can buy premium version of this theme to remove links. If you do not have copy of this theme, you can download it from Nattywp.com.

    I am stuck.

I did hear back from them and the suggestion is that I check file permissions, I have been searching this support site and I cannot find anything that can help me, any ideas?
