[resolved] I don't seem to have the options to increase the number of columns for tiles (14 posts)

It appears that every screenshot I see online has the Column field in the "Add Gallery" screen, allowing you to increase the number of columns for tiled images but I don't have it in my screen so I have to make do with 3 columns. Did you guys recently remove the columns function?

You're right, we did remove this option in the last Jetpack update.

If you choose a Tiled Gallery type, Jetpack automatically calculates the number of columns based on your theme's content width, and on the number and size of your images.
For example, if you were to upload more portrait images, you'd get more columns than if you were to use landscape pictures.

I hope that clarifies things a bit.

    Hi,

Are you sure this new feature is rock steady... ?

After pulling my hair out trying to understand why I had columns or not under various circumstances, I was glad to find this topic and Jeremy's explanation.

Unfortunately, the number of columns is totally unpredictable, NOT always related to this method of calculation, and NOT steady.

If you take the same theme & exact configuration, and the same images, you can have 0 or 9 columns proposed when creating a "Jetpack gallery". Or for instance 9 columns proposed for two or 40 images..

Could you confirm me there ARE bugs ? Many thanks in advance.

    Best regards.

@Erwan Could you post a link to one of the galleries, so I can have a closer look?

As I mentioned above, the number of columns depends on many factors (size of the images, orientation, number of images, theme's content width).

If you think that one of the parameters is not respected on your site, I'd happy to investigate further.

I probably misunderstood both of you, because I noticed weird / not steady backend column option behaviour for tiled galleries.

I unfortunately didn't took screenshots and I don't manage atm to replicate what I described (and I really saw, belive me ;-) !), i.e. 0, 2, 5, or 9 columns proposed on backend (using for instance Pagelines framework or Clean Retina theme) when selecting "Tiles" or "Squared Tiles" type.

Atm, my frontend galleries are OK and do adapt to size of images, orientation, number of images, theme or specific page / article content width. And the column option does'nt appear anymore on my backend for tiled galleries : which is supposed to be the case with this last Jetpack update, if I enventually understood you correctly... ? Am I wrong or right ?

Moreover, confusing French translation of Jetpack gallery settings do not help: I have "Thumnail Grid" (yes, in English !) for "Default", "Tiled Mosaic" (yes, in English !) for "Tiles", and "Mosaïque d'image carrées" for "Square Tiles"... A real mess ;-) !

Also using Pagelines framework and i do have some problems also with the number of columns.

No number of columns, i am trying to insert the number manually, nothing works.

No matter what size are the images, i get the default 500 px width. I think Pagelines does not define the width somehow or i do not know.

BUT I KNOW I WOULD LIKE TO USE THE TILLED GALLERIES in a way that they will go to full width of the page they are inserted on.

    Any help?

the link is here, also a basic gallery inserted for you guys to study.

You're right. There is no way to control the number of columns used in a Tiled Gallery, so the setting was removed.

Confusing French translation of Jetpack gallery settings do not help

All strings should be translated in the latest version of Jetpack, but if you find missing translations, you're welcome to suggest new translations!

You can follow the instructions here to define a specific width for your galleries:

    @Jeremy

All strings should be translated in the latest version of Jetpack, but if you find missing translations, you're welcome to suggest new translations!

    • Whatever their relevance, strings relating to galleries are translated in active GlotPress Jetpack 2.2. project but not in the .mo file delivered with Jetpack 2.2.5.
    • Moreover, the original English strings of the current translation in GlotPress do not even match the Tiled Gallery feature description. For instance, "Tiled Mosaic" versus "Tiles".
    • Hence: a real mess, which would incidentally make useless and even risky any other translation suggestion from me.

I think the topic you opened in the Pagelines support forum eventually resolved this really tricky problem, isn't it?

@Erwan - The topic i opened solved the problem partially.

Still hope that either Pagelines will declare a width thing or Jetpack will stop looking for the width and get smarter.

If the strings were added or modified since the last Jetpack release, they are not included in the current version of Jetpack, indeed. But they will be exported and added when we release the next version of Jetpack.

If you want to add all new strings to your existing Jetpack installation, you can copy this .mo file to Jetpack's /languages/ folder:

It's the opposite: French strings were added or modified before last Jetpack releases and were obviously not added in the Jetpack installation package. For instance, the string "Tiled Mosaic" was translated 2013-03-29 in GlotPress and is not translated in current Jetpack 2.2.5 "package" .mo file.

Thanks for your .mo link anyway ;-)

We do not always deploy the strings when we release a minor Jetpack update. I believe that's what happened with that string: it was translated but we didn't release any major version of Jetpack since then.

So you can rest assured: you can propose new translations in GlotPress! I'll be happy to review them, and they will be part of the next Jetpack release!

Uh, so this setting also means that when you aren't using a tiled gallery (but have the feature enabled) you can't set a column number for any type of gallery in the Add Media section.

    You're right. That's a bug, nice catch!

I created a trac ticket for this issue, and we'll get this fixed as soon as possible.
