• Hello,

I’m developing a multisite blog with WP 3.02. I’ve created a main site and two subsites (for now) using subdirectories, and I’ve made a few test posts on each site. However I cannot find any way to display my newest posts on the main site.

I’ve tried several widgets: Multisite Recent Posts Widget, Diamond MultiSite Widgets, Super Widgets and at least one other, all with the same result – nothing. None of my new posts show up in these widgets.

I’m pretty new to WordPress, so I may be missing something simple. I’m pretty experienced however with other CMS and general PHP skills, but I’m just starting in with WordPress, so any help, simple or technical, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Well, at least you figured out the part where you need to install a plugin to do it. 😉

Are the subsites marked as private? IF you ,t hat usually makes them not show up. Also – you normally have to go make a new posts after installing these, so then it can pick them up.

HI Andrea, thanks for responding. I have checked that my blogs are public, and I just made another test post. Still nothing. I find this very very strange.

    URL please. 🙂

The URL of my main site is:

    http://goldenstatescience.com

You’ll notice on this main site there’s a widget titled “Standard Post Widget” which is just the default post widget that I installed just to test if I could pull in any posts at all. It does work.

Here are a couple of subsites (I plan to have many more if I can ever get this working):

    Thanks so much

Well, it works, yes. but that one will never pull in posts from across the network.

Do you have any of the multisite specific widgets set up on the main blog? Cuz I don’t see any.

Also – check the installation instructions. Many of them need to go either in mu-plugins folder or be network activated.

Start with the diamond multsite one. Let me know when you have that installed and activated properly. Then I’ll get you to write a test post.

    Hi Andrea,

Regarding the default post widget: I wasn’t expecting it to pull in posts from other blogs, I just put it on my site to test of ANY of my posts were being recognized. Kind of make sure I’m not going crazy, as none of the multisite widgets that I have installed are even SHOWING UP, as you’ve noticed.

I have installed various ones with no success. I can see them in the back end, I can move them around in the back end for my template, but not even the titles of the widgets show up when I refresh my site.

I’ve tried switching templates, and I’ve tried setting the widgets alternately between normal activate and network activate with (I don’t think) any difference. And I don’t see a MU-Pliguns folder at all…I figured that was a pre-WP 3.0 feature. BUT, the modules that I’ve installed don’t come with any instructions regarding what folders or what type of activate. Have a look for yourself:

    I’m using this one:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multisite-latest-posts-widget/installation/

and here’s the Diamond on you recommend…no installation instructions at all:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/diamond-multisite-widgets/

If these are supposed to be going into a special folder, I don’t know anything about this. I’ve just been installing these plugins through the normal backend plugin installation area.

    Thanks again,
    Scott

    UPDATE ON THIS ISSUE

    Dear Andrea,

Just to cover all bases, I went back AGAIN and tried the default WP template. THESE WIDGETS IN QUESTION ARE NOW SHOWING UP. Apparently after I tried some of your previous suggestions the widgets DID show up, but I was unable to see them because my template was the problem.

So that brings me to another issue. I paid quite a bit of money for the template I want, and all other types of widgets seem to work with it. Any idea why JUST these multisite widgets (and I mean ALL of them, and I mean JUST THIS TYPE) would not work in a particular template?

Thanks once again for your expertise in this matter. And if you have a moment, I would still like to hear what exactly is a MU-Plugins folder, because I don’t think I have one.

    Best,
    Scott

You need to activate the widget network-wide or toss it in mu-plugins.

I have tried the diamond multsite widgets myself and used them on the main blog. I have no idea how they work on the other blogs.

you *could* ask the plugin author for help in using it. 😉

I almost always want full posts on the main site, so I normally use Sitewide tags:

Alos, I looked at one of your sub blogs and you’ve selected a theme option with no sidebar. Kinda hard to see widgets when there’s no sidebar.

Thanks for the helpful links, and for answering my numerous questions!
