[resolved] I can't find my API key anymore (6 posts)

I installed WP files through an FTP on my ISP web server. I got a welcome email from WP but I never received an API key with that.

All the support docs I find say to go under My Profile at the top of the page and under User Settings. Well, it works fine for WP.com but I'm on WP.org and there is no bar at the top. Also, when I look at my user settings, it says nothing about an API key.

How do I get that info on my admin site, or how do I get that emailed to me? Isn't there a Tech Support email address for WP.org?

    Thanks for your help!

Nope, just us volunteers, but we're always (ok, almost always) happy to help.

I really wish they would just refer to it as a wordpress.com API key, because that's really what it is. For a variety of reasons (some actually quite logical), you need an API key from wordpress.com to use certain Automattic plugins (Akismet, WordPress.com Stats, etc). Since this is a wordpress.com API key, you won't find it in your self-hosted blog's profile. You actually need to open an account at wordpress.com to get one. You can either go to your profile on your wordpress.com blog for it, or take this shortcut if you're already logged in at wordpress.com.

Thanks, James, I just did that and possibly managed to install the stats plugin. Now I have to ask someone on the outside to visit my site to see if the stat plugin actually works...

Great, thanks for the tip! I'll make sure I do that when I actually have some content in. I'm still figuring out which theme to pick and the set-up is so much more complex than anything on wordpress.com!
