I can't download the newest version of wordpress. It's really frustrating. I go to download and I get a zip file which I can't download. I tried downloading winzip and it didn't help. I also extracted the file and didn't help. I tried everything. I have a window 7 computer.

    Any advice or help???

Are you trying to install it on your local computer? You have to set up a server environment first - see:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_your_own_Computer

Or if you want to install it on a live internet-accessible server, you need to set up hosting first - see:

I am trying to do my initial download of wordpress and when I download it, it just loads a file, but there is no zip icon to press or anything. It is just a wordpress folder w/things in it I don't understand. I feel like I am back in the days of DOS...ugh...my right brain is burning! Please help! ;)

Did you read the above and the links? Where are you installing it?

I just looked at both those links and I am sorry, but none of it makes sense to me. I swear I am not totally computer illiterate, but why is this not easier!? I have a domain name and a hosting site on hostgator & now was trying to set up wordpress, but I am completely confused as how to get this done! Please help?? thanks!

Oh, and I am just on my own home computer. I am not sure where else I would be installing it. On hostgator?? or godaddy?

Yes, you need to install it on the server wherever your site is hosted. Both hostgator and GoDaddy have 1-click installs for WP. Look up their support/documentation.
