In the last few weeks I have been getting an increased number of odd replies that don't relate to my bog entries whatsoever. It's not spam robots. It's people commenting on someone else's blog but it's posting to mine.

    Anyone else having this issue?

Are you sure that they aren't spam? Can you provide a link showing some of these comments?

Sounds like they probably are spam.

I can't provide a link because I am approving comments before they post. But most of the comments say something along the lines of "You have a great blog, I have learned a lot from your posts" or " I like your blogs, you have a lot of helpful info".

The problem is that my blog is all obituaries and online condolences to the families of the deceased. I do get some obvious spam, but I think I'm getting another blog's comments somehow.

Yeah, those are common spam comments. Since they're being posted by bots, they literally post the same thing on thousands of blog. Unfortunately, "You have a great blog" is relevant to most blogs, and many users wind up approving them.

Oh I see. How effective are those "human test" things? I haven't used it yet because I dislike a lot of them.

If you're referring to CAPTCHA (answer a question or enter random letters and numbers), they work very well, but they're an inconvenience to your readers.

Try Akismet (included with WordPress) and this plugin:

The question/answer systems are relatively effective if you change the questions frequently. The random letters/numbers approach is pretty much useless.

Are you sure you don't have Akismet activated? It should catch most of those spam comments. Sure, a few will trickle through but it should reduce the number of them by ten fold.
